Transformative Coaching Key Characteristics & Benefits

DEEP LISTENING

When the client is speaking, the coach uses active listening to truly engage in the conversation. They prefer to listen more than talk, for they do not want to interrupt the free flow of thoughts and emotions. Additionally, the coach keeps track of what has already been said so their questions are more specific to the client. When certain questions remain unanswered by the client, the coach notes this (it could be the result of the client feeling uncomfortable).

HOLDING SPACE

Clients should not be afraid when they enter a coaching relationship. To ensure that the client is as comfortable as possible, the coach creates an office that is a safe space. Clients are not judged or bullied by their coaches. Instead, the client is allowed to speak about anything they like, hopefully without any negative emotion toward the coach. Coaches often add moments of silence so the client can dig deeper into the root of their issues and ask questions that are more meaningful.

OBSERVING AND IDENTIFYING

Most coaches do not effectively utilize this strategy, but it is a specialty of transformative coaches. When discussing the client’s issues and goals, the coach also places a high value on the individual’s culture, identity, values, beliefs, and psychological patterns. Noting this helps coaches make more tailored plans and responses to the client. They will also gain a better understanding of what is truly troubling to the client, even if the client does not recognize this factor themself.

REFLECTING BACK

Reflection is a crucially important part of growth. It is also a key part of active listening and developing a true understanding of a client’s needs and desires. When the client makes a statement that is very significant, coaches often confirm the statement and ask follow-up reflection questions so they can explore the statement to a deeper degree. Some wisdom is also shared by coaches when they reflect back on their own personal experiences to help a client.

CHALLENGE

Extremely challenging questions are not usually proposed to individuals who have just started coaching. However, once the relationship has matured, or when the client simply feels comfortable being challenged, transformative coaches use challenges as a catalyst for growth. They will ask difficult questions that help a client explore elements of their life they may have overlooked.

Transformational Vs. Transactional Coaching

While these two types of coaching may seem similar at first, there are many distinct differences between the two of them. The very goals and premises of these two coaching styles is distinctly different. Transactional coaches work to help individuals achieve the most they can with their current ways of thinking. They do not make massive changes to their client’s ways of thinking. Perspectives, identity, and the root cause of problems are not explored deeply.

On the other hand, transformational coaches believe that significant changes need to occur in one’s thinking process and view of self to truly make real changes. These are the individuals that focus on understanding one’s inner self, values, and history as well as culture before starting the goal-setting process.

When a client for transformational coaching speaks about their dreams, goals, and passions, they know that there is always a greater story beyond their statements. In transactional coaching, these goals, dreams, and passions would simply be used to formulate goals. However, transformational leaders seek to get a deep understanding of how these qualities make up your identity, so you can explore options you may have never considered and so you realize facts you never knew about yourself.

Transformational coaches ask questions about values, culture, identity, passions, and goals not because they believe that this is only needed for effective goal setting. Instead, they have a desire to deeply understand why you make the decisions you do, why your lifestyle is the way it is, and why you truly want to change. In doing so, the changes you make can be more meaningful and dramatic.

How To Find and Choose a Good Transformational Coach?

Every coach has slightly different strategies and ways they can support you, so it is important to ensure you find someone who is the best fit for you. Ensure that you find an experienced coach, for starters. Some individuals go through tremendous to become qualified coaches, while others may not have the same level of insight.

If your friends, family members, coworkers, or employers recommend a certain coach or coaching organization, consider finding out more information. Other ways you can locate professional coaches are through LinkedIn or coaching organizations, like the International Coach Federation. Consider which questions you would ask your coach when you do meet. Also, create a list of values that you would like your coach to uphold.

Consider if the coach:

  • Clearly states their strategies and is transparent with their techniques.
  • If the coach is specifically a transformational coach or a different type of coach.
  • Does their description mention any values that you want to focus on? Or, if you want to specifically target a certain skill or part of your life (professional or otherwise), is it mentioned?
  • Has a clear list of their credentials, certificates, and past experiences.

Certain coaching companies, such as HIGH5, have high standards for individuals to be hired. There are tests, some made by Gallup, that ensure individuals are competent coaches through coach training. Other coaches take years of training in college to become certified and ready for the job market.

How Long Does the Transformational Coaching Last & How Many Sessions?

Transformational coaching relationships can last for years, or even your entire career. However, they can also help you in the short term. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how long you want your transformational coach to stay with you and support you. Often, people find that after a few months or years, they feel confident in their own abilities and the coach has helped them recover from their biggest issues. So, they end the coaching relationship at that point.

Others, though, prefer to always have a coach available to them. They may not consistently go to coaching sessions, but whenever a problem arises, they take comfort in knowing a transformational coach can help them turn the situation into a more positive one. Many entrepreneurs especially choose to have coaches for the long term. This is so because the risk of failure is so high, and they may need to completely transform their career if the business does fail.

Coaching session length also depends on numerous variables. For example, how many questions do you have? Is the problem you are dealing with severe, or mild? These factors influence the length of the coaching session, but they generally range from around thirty minutes to an hour and a half.
